COLUMN: Pop Culture Notebook It's difficult to articulate the importance the songs and poems of Jim Carroll have had in both my life and career over the years, so it was an amazing honor be asked to participate in the Jim Carroll tribute Monday night at Ralph's Chadwick Diner, where Alex Charalambides brought together a wide variety of writers and musicians to perform Carroll's poems and songs. I first encountered Carroll's music in the mid-'80s, and have been carrying around a copy of his poetry collection, "Living at the Movies," since 1988. He's an artist whom I've only had one chance to see perform live - in Taos, New Mexico, a few years back - but one whose words and music I've returned to often. So having an opportunity to celebrate his work meant a great deal to me. And a celebration it was - this was no affair for moping, but rather an eruption of love for an artist whose work has brought much joy and comfort to many.
